How To Get StumbleUpon Traffic

When you want to get fast traffic to your blog social media is a great way to get a lot quickly. StumbleUpon today is one of my favorite sites to get traffic from because it’s very easy and can send you quite a few hits pretty fast. So below I’ve written how to get StumbleUpon traffic to your blog.

First things first, if you haven’t already, you need to install the StumbleUpon toolbar. Download it here.

Now that you’ve installed it check if your website is listed on StumbleUpon yet or not. You can do that here. If your URL is not already listed in StumbleUpon then use your toolbar to submit it and review it. Just click the ‘I like it!’ button and fill it out then submit it.

Once you’ve done all of that you need to start being active and testing with things. When you post a blog post, submit it to StumbleUpon. Just don’t submit your blog posts or pages from your websites or you could be banned. You need to submit other pages from other sites.

How To Get StumbleUpon Traffic
Now that you’ve got the toolbar installed and have started being active, it’s time to get some traffic from StumbleUpon. If you have any friends that you know that have a StumbleUpon account, then you should add them. Also, if there are other people that are in the same market as you and have a StumbleUpon account add them as a friend as well.

Once you have a few friends, it’s very, very easy to get StumbleUpon traffic. Once you’ve made a blog post, and you think it’s worthy of being stumbled, tell your friends about it and ask them to Stumble it. Who knows, they might send it to their friends and tell them to Stumble it or maybe they’ll make a blog post with a backlink to your article.

What Quality is the StumbleUpon traffic?
When getting traffic from StumbleUpon it can be poor quality traffic that won’t stay on your site for more than ten seconds. So how do you avoid this?

1. Have A Great Design – When people are using the toolbar to stumble other websites, they aren’t usually going to stay and read. With StumbleUpon traffic, first impressions are very important. If you have a nice design there’s a better chance that they’ll stay and have a look around or perhaps they might revisit another time.

2. Easy To Remember – You want your site to be easy to remember. For example, you want to have a URL that is very easy to remember so they won’t forget it. You also should have a unique logo that makes them remember your site as well.

3. Don’t Have Too Many Ads – You don’t want a website that has just a bunch of ads all over the page. This makes your page look newbie-ish and they won’t want to stay long. By having a bunch of ads, a first impression will mostly think you’re just trying to make money and your content isn’t worth looking at.

4. Great Content & Enough Of It – You want great content and enough of it so that when they visit they enjoy it and will want to return to get more of it. Also you don’t want it to be that they can read all of your content in one visit. That’s why having enough of it is important.

If your site fits into those points then you should be fine and the quality of the traffic from StumbleUpon will be better.

So there you go, that’s how to get StumbleUpon traffic and a lot of it. It’s very simple and easy but it works.

I’ve been trying to utilize StumbleUpon for some time now. I’ve gotten some traffic from there, but hardly a noticeable amount. Guess I need to start making some friends that use it :) I know there are some people pulling in tons of hits from StumbleUpon…gotta get myself to that point!

    Nice post..

  • Caden - June 30th, 2009

How many hits have you gotten from it?

Feel free to add me btw ;)

  • Cool post, just subscribed.

  • Static | ahnternet - June 30th, 2009

I’ve found StumbleUpon traffic to be beyond tolerable. I used to input a lot of time into StumbleUpon. My profile page used to be a PR3. :S However, due to a lot of the users on the network being not so focused, only my fun/joke/humor site was benefiting a lot from it. Sites like ahnternet and more niche-focused sites were failing with it miserably. Well, not failing, but not the output I had expected from the time I put into it. :( Bad memories… Haven’t checked out SU more recently though.

Did it get significantly better? Mind you, I’ve listed to all four points.

  • Caden - June 30th, 2009

Eh no the quality isn’t the best. That’s why I don’t focus on it too much but I still do focus on it a bit.

But yeah for more niche-focused site’s it’s probably not the traffic you want to focus on getting the most of.

  • Simon | Teenius - July 1st, 2009

    Cool post.

Personally I’ve never really optimised my site for SU… I don’t even have an account (but that’s set to change today!).

I do find that usually, when I actually get stumbled by someone, it produces loads of traffic. One stumble got me 150 UVs once! :D

  • Nick | r4 revolution - July 1st, 2009

Your four points which you have described in the post about the quality of stumble traffic is quite impressive and effective. I will follow that.

  • The Bad Blogger - July 1st, 2009

I have never use stumble upon before, may be I should go open an account and try it our… thanks for sharing..

I’ve just submitted my article to stumpleupon but don’t see it brings traffic to my blog, so I stopped it. Perhaps I could give it a try again by following your tips. Thanks Caden! :)

  • Deneil Merritt - July 1st, 2009

Great post but you forgot about explaining how stumbles, reviews, and tags affect the amount of traffic you get from stumbleupon. Maybe I will cover this soon.

By the way keep up the great content.

  • Odzyskiwanie Danych - July 2nd, 2009

There are only 3 points to getting a social bookmarking traffic (like digg and stubleupon):
    1. content
    2. content
    3. content
And capable servers ;) . The users there don’t care about your design or you SEO efforts – all they care about is interesting content.

  • blinkky - July 2nd, 2009

I know that having quality traffic is hard. But, never give up =)

  • Jake | Web Journey - July 2nd, 2009

Cool post. I have been trying to get better traffic from Stumble Upon for a while now. You had some great tips.

I am really liking the blog. Count on my further readings.

  • Lee Ka Hoong - July 3rd, 2009

@Odzyskiwanie Danych, I agree with you. Traffic from bookmarking site doesn’t really care about your SEO, as long as you have attractive title and they love your articles, then they will return and read your other articles again. Anyway, I’m not doing well with bookmarking sites and the purpose I submit my article to them is to get more backlinks. :)

    Regards,
    Lee

  • Hesham - July 4th, 2009

This post is just on time, I think the road is clear now for tumble Upon members to drive traffic to their blogs, thanks for the great post & tips!

  • Andrew - July 4th, 2009

Stumbleupon traffic have lower bounce rate than any other social network (I don’t know about twitter). Stumbleupon traffic are there to stay, and not like diggs that like only top ten posts.

  • Caden - July 4th, 2009

    @Hesham, yep no problem :)

  • News TV - July 8th, 2009

  • Melvin - July 11th, 2009

well this post can easily be helpful to me as i haven’t really gotten a lot of SU traffic to my personal blog… The most that I got was around 200 in a day and I know there’s more to come if I optimize it more..

  • Grace - July 11th, 2009

SU used to be a big hype about a year ago; I guess the fire’s died down and the discussion ended, but people are still using it! I agree that it does bring traffic, but unless there is other content that appeals to the viewer, they usually end up leaving very soon.

  • Caden - July 12th, 2009

@Melvin, follow those steps and you can get good traffic from it. Yesterday I got 320 visits from stumbleupon.

@Grace, yeah that’s true. Out of my 320 visits yesterday the average time per visitor was 0:23 which is higher than usual but still, it’s not very good. The more you get though, it can be useful.

Sites that go nuts with the ads are a major turn off they make the design look too busy and the owner look too greedy.

The speed limit is the speed limit. It doesn’t matter if everyone is speeding. If an officer decides to stop a car, he can issue a citation and it will generally hold up in court.
